A way of detecting and tracking data scraping, plagiarism, and theft is to seed the data with either easily identifiable items in order to trace where the data ends up or with bogus records in order to destroy the value of the data. For example, by inserting a record in a database of phone numbers with an odd name, the true originator/owner could identify that bogus record if it appears in a competitor's database.
